Artist of the Week:
tINI
Instagram: @tinicouldbeworse
It’s tINI time. Let’s do this.
tINI, born Sonja Bettina Günther, hails from Munich, Germany, and is now recognized as one of the most influential female artists in underground house and techno. Her musical journey began early. She started playing drums at age seven and was surrounded by a home environment where her brother’s love for hip-hop and vinyl sparked her curiosity for rhythm and sound. In the mid-90s, she was already collecting hip-hop records and experimenting with mixing on her brother’s Atari, laying the foundation for her future as a DJ and producer.
Her early musical palette was shaped by New Wave, indie, and grunge, but it was the Munich club scene and her first experiences with UK garage and two-step that drew her into electronic music. Especially nights spent at venues like Raum Acht. A pivotal moment came when she heard Moodymann’s "Amerika," which inspired her to shift her DJ sets from hip-hop to more electronic sounds.
tINI’s professional DJ career kicked off in 2003 with her own "tINI All Night Long" events in Munich. She quickly gained recognition for her unique style and deep musical knowledge, earning residencies and touring across Europe. Her big break came after catching the attention of Loco Dice, a key figure in the house and techno scene, leading to her joining the Desolat label and becoming a regular at Desolat events worldwide.
In 2010, tINI launched her own event series, "tINI and the Gang," in Ibiza. This party became renowned for its inclusive, community-driven atmosphere and for championing up-and-coming talent alongside established names. The brand has since celebrated over a decade of successful showcases around the globe, making tINI not only a respected artist but also a key promoter and mentor in the scene.
Her debut album, Tessa, was released in 2011 on Desolat, inspired by her transformative experiences in Ibiza. The album is a testament to her ability to blend deep, groovy house with intricate, emotive techno. She has also released numerous EPs and remixes, and in 2018, she founded her own label, Gang Records, further cementing her role as a tastemaker and supporter of new talent.
Some tracks & sets that we love:
tINI’s DJing is characterized by her extensive vinyl collection and her ability to create a warm, inclusive vibe wherever she plays, whether it’s a massive festival or an intimate beach party. She is known for her positive energy behind the decks, always smiling and connecting with the crowd, which has become a signature part of her performances.
Her story is one of passion, authenticity, and community. She has continuously pushed boundaries in underground house and techno, not just as a DJ and producer but as a mentor and promoter. Her sets are journeys (deep, groovy, and full of soul) while her commitment to supporting new talent makes her a beloved figure in the global dance music community.
If you haven’t caught a tINI set yet, make it a priority. Her infectious energy and deep musical knowledge guarantee an unforgettable experience. Good news: she will be in NYC July 4th weekend for her annual boat party! Ticket link here.
