The LowDown #133
One-hundred and thirty third installment of our weekly newsletter from the Team.
From the Team:
As promised a rundown of Unum from Quill:
Hello everyone, its been a while, how’ve you been? Last year, a group of LED executives dipped our toes into the realm of Eastern European 24 hour festivals by attending Sunwaves. This year DaveID and I (Q) ran it back, this time taking our talents to UNUM Festeval in beautiful Shengjin, Albania. Needless to say there’s a lot to unpack here, both musically, and otherwise, Ill do my best to keep it short.
The Music:
UNUM, similar to Sunwaves is made up of four stages: Main, Beach, Pine and Secret. At UNUM, the main draw for music lovers like us is the Pine stage which can best be described as a structure taken straight off of the set of the Hobbit was pumping out tunes from noon on Thursday to 1:30 pm on Monday. Non. Stop. All the biggest names in minimal house were in attendance and boy did they throw down. Personally, I was able to check a lot of boxes in one go, for example seeing Margaret Dygas, Francisco Del Garda and Craig Richards all not only for the first time but in a row to close out the festival on Monday Morning. I was also FINALLY able to see Ricardo Villalobos, who played B2B Maher Daniel, for the first time. I previously had been lined up to see Ricardo 4 or 5 times in various places around the globe to no avail. The King of antics not only showed up but delivered 6 hours of music that could best be described as a 6 dimensional roller coaster. Although I have nothing to compare it to, I’m told this was on the better end of Ricardos sets. This was also the set that gave us the now famous/infamous red-haired woman, who was for lack of better words, having a very nice time on top of the subwoofers up front. The top set of the weekend in my opinion was Priku b2b Arapu who “closed out“ Saturdays lineup with possibly the greatest closing track I’ve ever heard: a rominimal edit of Coldplays God Put A Smile Upon My Face, which in the words of someone in our group “scratched an itch I didn’t know I had”. There was something so sublime about hearing Chris Martins voice emerging from a nest of beeps and boops at 10:00 am in Albania, I had to collect my jaw from the forest floor when it ended. Anyway here’s the ID on that:
It comes to us from Mexican/American DJ & Producer CHKLTE, who’s set sadly fell before I arrived in Shengjen, but I WILL remember that name. The pine stage has cemented itself firmly amongst my favorite places I’ve ever been, and I promise you, I will be back. A popular topic of discussion amongst the people was how to compare the pine stage to Stage 4 [at Sunwaves]. After some thought, the best analogy I could construct is that Stage 4 is like the hypno toad, and the Pine stage is like stepping into Narnia. Both posses unique powers that simply make the people dance…forever.
I would be remiss if I did not discuss the Secret Stage, put on by DJ & Vinyl dealer Wax Material. The setup is quite literally a [functional] camper van that Jessi the proprietor has converted into a stage and mini record shop. The Wax Material crew literally drove this stage from Birmingham in the UK to Albania, check out the Wax Material Instagram for a day by day vlog of that journey. The stage, tucked away behind the food trucks provided a true acoustic sanctuary. Finley tuned Funktion One speakers, incense, and good ass vibes. Ive long said that the coolest thing a human can do is mix vinyl and the sets I saw at the secret stage only cemented that position. Highlights from the secret stage were JustJoe, Bartolomeo and Wax Material.
The Rest:
With any festival, music is only half of the story. The other half is the people, and in my experience, the more inaccessible the festival is, the better the people are. The commitment required to attend something like this, specifically for Americans, affords you respect in the eyes those that didn’t travel quite as far. Wherein many places in Europe Americans are seen as pests, at UNUM; we are peers. Some quick examples of good people we met:
We ran into a friend from Greece we had met at Sunwaves last year, after a brief moment of pure shock that we all remembered each other, it was like wed known each other since kindergarten.
We met a group of Americans living in Spain teaching English and bonded over our shared love of Eating Glue by Paranoid London. Nobody even played that song.
I made an Argentinian woman’s day by letting her wear (and eventually keep) my rainbow sun hat.
I spent an afternoon discussing and solving the worlds problems with an Italian ICC lawyer over gin and tonics and cigarettes after my friends went to bed.
Joe Couldnt find the windex
the list goes on… you get it
In conclusion, I continue to be impressed by the love and respect present in the international music scene. The only question remains is: where to next year?

Artist of the Week:
Pancratio
Instagram: @_pancratio
We hope you enjoyed last week’s mix of the week. Impossible not to, since Pancratio is currently the talk of the town. Let’s dive a little deeper into Gian Lu’s background and tracks.
Pancratio is the project of Italian DJ, producer, and sound designer Gian Luigi Mendozza, an artist whose work moves across house, electro, breaks, ambient, and experimental electronic music. Originally from Rome and now based in Berlin, he has spent years developing a sound that draws from a wide range of influences while remaining firmly connected to club underground culture.
Known for his versatility in both production and DJing, Pancratio avoids being tied to a single genre. His releases move between deep house grooves, electro rhythms, acid textures, and more atmospheric compositions, always maintaining a strong sense of identity. Rather than following trends, his music reflects a broad musical curiosity and a focus on creating records that stand the test of time.
See for yourself by listening to his last two EP releases, which are both continuing to make waves across global dancefloors:
“Automatic House” and “Artificial Intelligence” are my personal favorites. Take a look at Raresh b2b Praslea rinsing the later track at 5AM during his set at Unum Festival in Albania just 2 weeks ago. Morning Magic!
Alongside his own productions, Pancratio is the founder of One Trip To Avyon, a label and creative platform that has become known for its carefully curated releases and forward-thinking approach to electronic music. He is also involved with OTTA Research Lab, where he works with emerging artists and supports creative development within the scene.
His discography includes releases on respected labels such as Love On The Rocks, as well as collaborative projects with artists including Simone De Kunovich. Records like Love Letters, Memory Card EP, and the Korghettini Electronics series showcase the breadth of his sound.
I had the pleasure of seeing him live in Madrid last weekend, and he did not disappoint. Add him to your list and take advantage of his presence if you are ever in the same city! That being said… we hope to see you in Brooklyn soon Gian!

Mix of the Week:
Dekmantel Mix 512 - Ryan Elliott
“Ryan Elliott has been woven into the fabric of the underground for two decades. The Detroit native and Faith Beat label head cut his teeth back home before relocating to Berlin in 2009, where he became a core member of the Berghain and Ostgut Ton family that helped shape the sound of the contemporary scene. He has always straddled the house and techno divide, merging moods and rhythms from each into his own immersive soundscapes.
Not long after a 12-hour, all-vinyl set at Berghain to mark his 50th birthday, Elliott has now selected an hour of “old, new, rare and unreleased music” and rolled it into a typically smooth selection for us. Warm, fulsome low ends underpin a cool, unhurried mix that slowly dials up the pressure with passionate vocals and playful rhythms. It’s the sound of a real master at work.”
